For nearly two decades, Denise Schiller has been a dedicated member of Boolarra South Landcare, generously giving her time, energy and care to community and environmental projects across the local area.
Denise moved to Boolarra in 2006 with her husband Mick, and one of the first things they did was join Friends of the Upper Morwell River and Boolarra South Landcare.
“Conservation, protection of our environment, improving biodiversity and working with likeminded people in revegetation and restoration of our local area were important to me,” Denise said.
Since then, Denise has played a key role in countless activities, including serving as secretary from 2015. Known for her enthusiasm, generosity and willingness to help wherever needed, her contribution has gone far beyond administration.
With Denise’s support, Boolarra South Landcare applied for grants, delivered training and information days, supported volunteers, and welcomed students, Work for the Dole participants and Community Service participants onto local projects. She was also involved in field days, wildlife monitoring, seed collection, workshops, film nights and bushfire recovery activities.
One of Denise’s most memorable experiences was working with the Green Army.
“Working with the Green Army proved to be a highlight as we were to help get these young people work ready. We got them out of bed each day, they came enthusiastically, they learnt social and other skills, and they made friends. We improved their life skills and made their lives more meaningful,” Denise said.
Other initiatives Denise is proud of include reopening Morwell River Falls and helping with the recovery and revegetation of the Old Mill site following the devastating 2009 bushfires.
Although now retired to a nearby town, Denise remains closely connected to Boolarra and continues to support the community she has contributed so much to over the years.
Reflecting on her time with Landcare, Denise said it has been wonderful to be part of an organisation that makes such a meaningful difference.
“That is why I would encourage people to join landcare,” Denise said.
